Corrupted SOLIDWORKS File

A SOLIDWORKS file is considered corrupt when the file data is lost or damaged, making it unreadable by the software.

How does file corruption occur?

A SOLIDWORKS file can become corrupt when one of the following occurs:

  1. Load Shedding / Power Fluctuations,
  2. Terminating the program,
  3. FTP Issues,
  4. Network Failures, and,
  5. Faulty Hardware / Hardware Failure.

How do I know when a SOLIDWORKS file is corrupt?

SOLIDWORKS files are deemed corrupt when the following error messages occur:

  1. An unknown error occurred while accessing "filename".
  2. SOLIDWORKS encountered a serious problem in the file "Filename". Please contact your local SOLIDWORKS support representative for help in troubleshooting this problem.
  3. SOLIDWORKS encountered a problem in the file "filename". Would you like SOLIDWORKS to attempt to repair the file?

Can a corrupted SOLIDWORKS file be recovered or repaired?

In some cases, yes. The auto repair function attempts to identify which segments are damaged from the corrupted files and removes them, if possible.

When sending the files to Dassault Systems for repair, there is a minimum 3 day waiting period. File repair is not guaranteed.

Can file corruption be prevented?

Yes. For this to be achieved we need to observe the following:

  1. Invest in a good UPS. This will not only prevent file damage but also prevent the damage of the hardware.
  2. Be patient. Many users terminate the program or force restart / shutdown when the program takes time to load.
  3. Maintain computer hardware. Faulty hardware affects the software that leads to files being corrupted. Periodic system maintenance will minimize issues. Backups are also useful. For information on Backup/Recover options, please click here, Backup/Recover Options.
  4. Network maintenance. Should users require to access files from the network, it is advisable to contact the company IT department.
  5. Work on the local hard drive. Avoid working from a server. Copy files to your local drive to work on. Once completed, they may be copied to the server.
