SOLIDWORKS Hole Callout File Error

When preforming a year version update of SOLIDWORKS, (i.e. updating SOLIDWORKS from 2023 SP05 to 2024 SP02), it is possible to receive the following error when attempting to add a hole callout in a drawing.

This error can occur if the file is not in the described location or is missing. You may still be able to place the hole callout after dismissing the error, but the information provided will be far less than normal.

If the file is not in the described location, the following can be done:

Updating File Locations

  1. Select the Gear Icon to open the System Options.
  2. Go to file locations and select “Hole Callout Format File” from the drop-down menu.
You can see in the image below the current folder directory is C:\Program Files\SOLIDWORKS Corp\SOLIDWORKS\lang\english.
If this was not already the preset folder option, set it to this.

If you still receive the error despite the folder directory being C:\Program Files\SOLIDWORKS Corp\SOLIDWORKS\lang\english, this may be because the folder it is referencing is for an older year version of SOLIDWORKS.
If this is the case, you will need to do the following:

  1. Delete the existing folder directory.
This can be done by selecting the folder directory and clicking “Delete”.
  2. Add correct year version folder directory.
Once you have deleted the old folder directory, you will then click “Add”.
The Windows File Explorer will open, and you will need to navigate to the correct year version.
If there are multiple SOLIDWORKS Corp folders, the easiest way to check is by seeing which SOLIDWORKS Corp folder was modified closest to the current date or the same year of the SOLIDWORKS version you are using.

Once you have found the correct one, you can add the folder directory.

  3. Test that the correct change was made.
This can be done by attempting to re-add the hole callout.
If done correctly, you should see something like the image below.

You can see that the callout contains more information compared to the one seen earlier in this article.

If this still does not resolve the issue, the file may be missing.

To resolve this, you can run a SOLIDWORKS Repair to regenerate the file.

To do this, do the following:

  1. Start -> Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features.
  2. Right Click on your version of SOLIDWORKS and select “Change”.
  3. When the SOLIDWORKS Installation Manager appears, click “Repair the individual installation”.
  4. Select SOLIDWORKS as the product you wish to repair.
  5. Click Repair.

Once this has been done, you should no longer receive the error.
