How can I get my Composer BOM to be the same as my SOLIDWORKS BOM?

Are you trying to get your BOM in Composer to be the same as the one in your SOLIDWORKS drawing, but keep getting stuck? This article will show you a very easy way to make sure everything is the same across the board.

Creating a BOM can get very complicated and confusing when your assemblies start getting complex. Setting up and organizing your BOM is a very important step in the design process. You can imagine what confusion it will cause when your drawing and technical illustration BOM’s aren’t matching up with the correct balloons, order of components, or even missing certain components.

The best and easiest way to make sure that the BOM’s are the same across the board, is to import the BOM directly from SOLIDWORKS into Composer:

  1. Open your assembly and create a Bill of Materials by going to your Assembly Tab > Bill of Materials.
  2. Set it up exactly how you’d like it and save the assembly file.

  3. To import the file into Composer with the BOM, open Composer and go to File > Open.
Browse to the assembly file you just saved, and select it (Don’t open it yet)
At the bottom of the open dialog, you’ll see that there are many options we can set to make sure we import the correct data into our project. Select the “SOLIDWORKS” option and make sure that the “Import SOLIDWORKS BOM” option is ticked. This will take the BOM that we created and insert it into the project from the get-go.

Now you can continue with your project, being assured that the correct BOM layout is being used throughout the entire project, drawing and assembly.
